2. Step-by-Step Guide
JSX
JSX, or JavaScript XML, is a syntax extension for JavaScript. It allows us to write HTML-like syntax in our JavaScript code, which makes our code easier to understand and write.
Example:
const element = <h1>Hello, world!</h1>;
In the example above, the <h1> tag is not a string nor HTML. It's JSX, and it's a syntax extension to JavaScript.
Virtual DOM
The Virtual DOM (VDOM) is a programming concept where an ideal, or "virtual", representation of a UI is kept in memory and synced with the "real" DOM. It’s a step that happens between the render function being called and the changes being reflected in the DOM.
This process is called reconciliation.
Best Practices and Tips
- Always start component names with a capital letter in JSX.
- Since JSX is closer to JavaScript than to HTML, React DOM uses camelCase property naming convention instead of HTML attribute names.
- JSX prevents injection attacks by default.

Code Example 1: JSX
function HelloWorld() {
return <h1>Hello, World!</h1>;
}
ReactDOM.render(<HelloWorld />, document.getElementById('root'));
In this example, we define a simple HelloWorld function component that returns a JSX element (<h1>Hello, World!</h1>). We then render this component into a DOM element with the id "root".
Code Example 2: Virtual DOM
Unfortunately, we cannot provide a code example of the Virtual DOM because it is an abstract concept. Whenever a JSX element is rendered, React creates a tree of these elements, also known as the Virtual DOM. When state changes, React creates a new Virtual DOM and then compares it to the old one. Only differences are updated on the real DOM.

In this example, we introduce state to the Greeting component. The name state is initialized with the value of props.name. When the button is clicked, the setName function is called with the argument 'React', updating the name state and triggering a re-render of the Greeting component.

Try creating more complex components with different types of elements and state. Experiment with changing state and observe how React only updates the necessary parts of the DOM.
